It is also the only place on earth where one can find the Hard Ground Swamp Deer or Barasingha, a species that was on the brink of extinction not very long ago with just 66 animals, but now numbers more than 450. Other animals observed at Kanha include Leopards, Bison, Wild Dogs, Sloth Bear, Antelopes, Nilgai, Pangolins and Flying Squirrels to name a few. Reptiles and amphibians are found in abundance and a record of almost 300 species of birds have thrilled ornithologists, with each year bringing an unusual newcomer or two to the area. The park has a huge sandstone cliff in the centre, surrounded by Sal and Bamboo forests. Game safari's go out on jeeps in the early morning and in the afternoon. The landscape is accentuated by the ruins of many palaces and forts at this once royal hunting reserve. Ranthambore has large numbers of Sambar, Chital, and Nilgai. We will visit the magnificent Taj Mahal at sunrise today. Regarded as one of the Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this beautiful monument in pure white marble was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. It took 22 years of concerted effort by as many as 20,000 workers to complete this majestic mausoleum. Verses from the Koran are engraved on the walls, and fine inlay-work using semi-precious stones adorns the interiors. Although the Taj is one of the most photographed edifices in the world and is instantly recognized by people, seeing it for real is an awe-inspiring experience. Later in the day we will visit the massive Agra Fort, once the seat of the Mughal rulers and today a World Heritage Site. Built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar, the fort contains several palaces, pavilions, gardens, mosques and private chambers. Later drive to Delhi, on arrival checkin at the hotel. Overnight at the hotel.
